How much cord do I need?

The question every maker asks and no listing answers. Enter the size of the piece you want to make and we will tell you how many cords to cut, how long each one should be, and how many yards to buy — with the margin you actually need.

Four knots is the entire vocabulary

Macramé looks like it has a hundred techniques. It has four, repeated and rotated. Both kits teach them in this order, and by the third one you stop reading the booklet.

Lark’s head

How every cord gets onto the dowel. Fold in half, loop over, pull through. You will do it a hundred times and never think about it again.

Square knot

The knot macramé is made of. Four strands, two of them working, and the whole grid of a wall hanging comes out of it.

Half hitch

What makes the diagonal lines and the chevrons. Same motion as the square knot, rotated, which is the moment it clicks.

Gathering knot

How a plant hanger closes and how a bundle finishes. The one that makes a piece look finished instead of stopped.

Questions we get about the kits

How much cord do I need for a macramé wall hanging?

The working rule is four to five times the finished length per strand, and because every cord is folded in half over the dowel you cut roughly nine times the finished length per cord. For a piece 24" wide and 36" long in 3mm cord that is about 96 cords at 324" each, or roughly 950 yards including a 10% margin. The calculator above will do the arithmetic for whatever size you have in mind.

Do I need any tools or experience to start?

No. Both kits include the dowels, beads, rings and needle, and the only thing you have to find yourself is a pair of scissors. The booklet teaches the knots from zero, so the first project is also the first time you have ever tied a square knot.

What is actually in the box?

How long does each project take?

About thirty minutes per Christmas ornament, so that kit is one afternoon. The beginner kit is a weekend: the keychain in under an hour, the plant hanger in about two, the 18" wall hanging in three to four.

Is the cord real cotton?

Yes — 3mm single-twist undyed natural cotton, the same cord we use in the pieces we sell. It is not the stiff synthetic filler that comes in most imported kits, which is the single biggest reason a first project looks wrong no matter how carefully it was made.

Is a macramé kit a good gift?

It is the thing we are asked for most at the holidays. The Christmas kit arrives gift-boxed and ready to hand over, and because it makes six ornaments it also works as an evening with people: a table, a bottle of wine, and everyone going home with one they made.

When do the kits ship, and what does reserving mean?
